Numerous serious workplace health and safety issues at a workers camp for the $1bn Kidston Pumped Hydro Project, including filthy, mouldy rooms, putrid food, and gastro outbreaks, have prompted workers to down tools.

Genex Power’s 250MW renewable energy project near Georgetown, 270km north west of Townsville, will use wind, solar, pumped hydro and a battery storage system to support Queensland’s transition to net zero.

Union members and organisers have blasted the camp’s appalling state.

On Wednesday they voted to cease work on safety grounds until Genex meets its duty of care by providing a formal, written undertaking to address all concerns within a three-week period.
