Mining magnate Gina Rinehart has addressed the 2025 Bush Summit with a call to recognise the “essential” contribution of the mining industry, and the energy supply it relies on.
In a pre-recorded video, the Hancock Prospecting executive chairwoman said “very little” in our modern lives would exist without mined minerals, but the sector is under increasing threat from renewables-related costs.
“Despite the negative words of media and others, what we miners do is essential,” she said.Hancock Prospecting CEO Garry Korte blamed “poor government policy” for a crisis in the competitiveness of Australian industries, along with increased net zero compliance – often referred to as ‘green tape’ – driving up costs.
“The negatives don’t just stop at net zero legislation … we’ve seen a string of interventions in the gas market in the past few years, and they’ve led to uncertainty on whether a project will ever achieve its approvals,” Hancock Energy CEO Stuart Johnston added.
Introducing Mrs Rinehart, Aitken Mount Capital Partners founder Angus Aitken received a round of applause from the crowd after imploring Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen to “spend time without a camera crew” in the bush communities affected by wind farm developments.
